Connie Green, of Laurel, was recently chosen as the 2011 Nurse of the Year at Ellisville State School. Green has provided services at Ellisville State School since 2004 and currently works as a licensed practical nurse at the Paul D. Cotten, Sr. Unit. The announcement was made at the annual nurse appreciation reception held during National Nurses Week which is recognized May 6-12 every year.
Green was surprised but delighted to hear her name called as the Nurse of the Year. She stated, “I love taking care of the clients. I’m here to help them have a better day.” After being a nurse for twenty-three years Green is still enthusiastic about her profession. “I’ve never regretted it for a day, becoming a nurse,” she said. “I enjoy it as much or more today than I did twenty-three years ago.”
Carol Dykes, Nurse Chief at Ellisville State School, commended Green for her hard work and dedication. “Ms. Green works many hours with love and compassion for our clients, demonstrating patience, kindness, and understanding,” she stated. “She is always going beyond the call of duty with the interests of our clients in mind.”
In addition to Green, several other nurses were honored for outstanding service. Honored were Kala Coleman, LPN, of Laurel; Loretta Esters, LPN, of Hattiesburg; Keith Magee, RN, of Hattiesburg; Richard Reid, LPN, of Laurel; and Wanda Roberts, RN of Petal. Renée Brett, Director of Ellisville State School, addressed the nurses in attendance at the reception and expressed her appreciation for the job they do each day in providing care to the individuals receiving services through Ellisville State School. This year’s reception was sponsored by Ellisville State School physicians, Directors of Nursing, the Medical Clinic Supervisor, the Nurse Chief, the Director of Medical, the Assistant Director of Client Services and HMP Nursing Services. Several area businesses were also generous in donating door prizes for the event.
